Times, as we understand and measure it, is a human invention. The science of studying time, as well as the art of making instruments that measure time, is known as horology. Different instruments have been used to keep track of time over the years, in an effort to count time in equal units. Sundials, or sun clocks, were used as early as 3500 B.C. and divided daylight time into equal hours. In Europe, in the fourteenth century, the hourglass was used. Time was then measured by having a quantity of sand, water, or mercury run from the upper to the lower part over a set period of time. The first spring-powered clock was invented in Germany around 1510. The power for this clock came from a metal coil inside called a mainspring. To operate the clock, a person would wind the mainspring by turning a key. Battery-powered clocks were first used in the 1840s, with electric and quartz-powered clocks coming into use in the early 1900s.With the invention of battery and electric-powered clocks, there was no longer the need to wind a mainspring. As a result, time-keeping became much more accurate.

第 46 題至第 50 題為題組
Although the epoch of the crusades ignited a genuine economic and cultural revolution in western Europe, in the Orient these holy wars led to long centuries of decadence and obscurantism. Assaulted from all quarters, the Muslim world turned in on itself.Henceforth modernism became alien. Should cultural and religious identity be affirmed by rejecting this modernism, which the West symbolized? Or, on the contrary, should the road of modernization be embarked upon with resolution, thus risking loss of identity? Neither Iran, nor Turkey, nor the Arab world has ever succeeded in resolving this dilemma. Even today we can observe a lurching alternation between phases of forced westernization and phases of extremist, strongly xenophobic traditionalism.
The Arab world—simultaneously fascinated and terrified by these Franj [Franks], whom they encountered as barbarians, but whom subsequently managed to dominate the earth—cannot bring itself to consider the crusades a mere episode in the bygone past. It is often surprising to discover the extent to which the attitude of the Arabs (and of Muslims in general) towards the West is still influenced, even today, by events that supposedly ended some seven centuries ago

【題組】46 The crusades had a negative impact on the Muslim world, and this idea is suggested by the word _____ in the passage.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題:
We all probably know someone who is intelligent, but does surprisingly stupid things. What does it mean to be smart or intelligent? Our everyday use of the term is meant to describe someone who is knowledgeable and makes wise decisions, but this definition is at odds with how intelligence is traditionally measured. The most widely known measure of intelligence is the intelligence quotient, more commonly known as the IQ test, which includes visuospatial puzzles, math problems, pattern recognition, vocabulary questions, and visual searches.
The advantages of being intelligent are undeniable. Intelligent people are more likely to get better grades and go farther in school. They are more likely to be successful at work. And they are less likely to get into trouble(e.g., commit crimes)as adolescents. Given all the advantages of intelligence, though, you may be surprised to learn that it does not predict other life outcomes, such as well-being. You might imagine that doing well in school or at work might lead to greater life satisfaction, but several large scale studies have failed to find evidence that IQ impacts life satisfaction or longevity. Grossman and his colleagues argue that most intelligence tests fail to capture real-world decision-making and our ability to interact well with others. This is, in other words, perhaps why “smart” people, do “dumb” things.
The ability to think critically, on the other hand, has been associated with wellness and longevity. Though often confused with intelligence, critical thinking is not intelligence. Critical thinking is a collection of cognitive skills that allow us to think rationally in a goal-orientated fashion, and a disposition to use those skills when appropriate. Critical thinkers are amiable skeptics. They are flexible thinkers who require evidence to support their beliefs and recognize fallacious attempts to persuade them. Critical thinking means overcoming all sorts of cognitive biases.

【題組】48 What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
(A) Defining the meaning of critical thinking.
(B) Explaining why critical thinking is more important than intelligence.
(C) Giving examples of critical thinking.
(D) Presenting research findings on the impacts of critical thinking.

The Buddhist attitude towards death is fundamentally conditioned by a belief in reincarnation.   12    Hindus, Buddhists believe that, after death, the soul is reborn in another body. The kind of body and the station of life into which the individual is reborn   13   upon the kind of life he or she led previously. Those who led virtuous lives and attained merit are reborn into conditions that allow them to practice even greater virtue and to achieve a yet more   14   incarnation. The   15      also holds true; those who lead depraved lives can suffer a series of rebirths, each lower and more wretched than the last. This process is not endless, however. The soul seeks the upward path, and after innumerable incarnations can, through meditation and contemplation, become aware of the universal meaning of things. The Buddha is released from the cycle of death and rebirth,   16   the forms and changes of the material universe, and dwells forever in a timeless, formless, and unchanging state known as Nirvana.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題
At the beginning of the 20th century, less than 1,000 colleges with 160,000 students existed in the US. The number of colleges skyrocketed in waves, during the early and mid 20th century. State universities grew from small institutions of fewer than 1,000 students to campuses with 40,000 more students, with networks of regional campuses around the state. In turn, regional campuses broke away and became separate universities.
To handle the explosive growth of K–12 education, every state set up a network of teachers’colleges, beginning with Massachusetts in the 1830s. After 1950, they became state colleges and then state universities with a broad curriculum. Major new trends included the development of the junior colleges. They were usually set up by city school systems starting in the 1920s. By the 1960s they were renamed as “community colleges.”
Junior colleges grew from 20 in number in 1909, to 170 in 1919. By 1922, 37 states had set up 70 junior colleges, enrolling about 150 students each. Meanwhile, another 137 were privately operated, with about 60 students each. Rapid expansion continued in the 1920s, with 440 junior colleges in 1930 enrolling about 70,000 students. The peak year for private institutions came in 1949, when there were 322 junior colleges in all; 180 were affiliated with churches, 108 were independent and non-profit, and 34 were private schools being run for-profit.
Many factors contributed to rapid growth of community colleges. Students parents and businessmen wanted nearby, low-cost schools to provide training for the growing white-collar labor force, as well as for more advanced technical jobs in the blue-collar sphere. Four-year colleges were also growing, albeit not as fast; however, many of them were located in rural or small-town areas away from the fast-growing metropolis. Community colleges continue as open-enrollment, low-cost institutions with a strong component of vocational education, as well as a low-cost preparation for transfer students into four-year schools. They appeal to a poorer, older, less prepared element.

【題組】49 Which of the following statistics is TRUE?
(A) Before 1919, there were already more than 170 junior colleges.
(B) In the 1920s, there were about 140 privately-operated junior colleges.
(C) In 1949, there were totally 180 junior colleges with 108 independent non-profit.
(D) The peak year for private community college expansion came at the year of 1922.
